Vision

Mayor Balzotti’s vision for Brockton is one of a vibrant city. As a community, Brockton is well on its way to realizing that goal, thanks to Mayor Balzotti’s leadership. The sustainable revitalization of the Commonwealth’s seventh largest city is a process, but a holistic one. Under Mayor Balzotti’s administration, this revitalization has begun, touching upon all aspects of the city – from economic development and public safety to education and sound fiscal management. Take a look at the progress Mayor Balzotti has made in her first term.

Focus on Public Safety

Mayor Balzotti faced an uptick in violence when she first took office – with four homicides in the first month. To combat this, she met with local, state, and federal law enforcement officials, to work out how to best share resources to enact a zero tolerance approach to violence and crime in the community. To date, there have three large scale crack downs that have resulted in the arrest of more than 60 individuals and the confiscation of over 40 weapons.

Education

As Mayor, she worked with the school department and unions to keep teachers on the job. A budget shortfall in 2010 would have slashed staffing levels across the district. By fostering collaboration, vital positions were preserved. Mayor Balzotti also worked to ensure that all three branches of the Brockton Public Library remained open, even on a limited basis. Libraries are important neighborhood resources for residents of all ages.

Community Engagement

During her first term, Mayor Balzotti opened up city government, inviting citizens to serve on five task forces exploring the city’s most pressing needs. Those task forces developed

recommendations that will play a part in planning Brockton’s future. Monthly constituent office hours are held, allowing residents to share their thoughts, ideas and concerns about the city directly with the Mayor. Under Mayor Balzotti’s guidance, the city’s web site was redesigned, a monthly email newsletter started, and the city’s social media presence enhanced. All these methods allow more residents and stakeholders access to city information.

Increased economic investment and development

On the campaign trail, Mayor Balzotti pledged to increase Brockton’s commercial tax base and redevelop the city’s dormant industrial enclaves and address vacant properties. By working with local, state, and federal leaders, Mayor Balzotti has been able to network and market Brockton development incentives (zoning and permitting opportunities) to attract new growth and development. But, economic development is two-fold, and existing businesses have also been given support and advocacy under Balzotti’s administration.

Strong Fiscal Management

Despite decreasing state and federal aid, Mayor Balzotti presented two balanced budgets. Both of those budgets maintained core services for residents of all ages and sustained current staffing levels for municipal departments.
